At the domestic box office on Monday, Avatar: The Way of Water brought in $16.2 million, matching the previous Avatar movie from 13 years ago and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story from 2016. With a domestic total of $150.3 million at the end of Monday, The Way of Water has completed its fourth day of play. On a global scale, it finished Monday with a total of $497.1 million and has already surpassed $500 million on Tuesday. The success of the film has helped Disney surpass the $4 billion milestone in worldwide ticket sales, making them the most successful Hollywood company this year. The film is hoping to do well over the year-end holidays, when weekdays may be as busy as Saturdays with moviegoing, to make up for a weaker-than-expected domestic opening. After the box office rebound slowed this fall due to a general shortage of products caused by production and postproduction delays linked to the pandemic, Hollywood and theatre owners could use some good news. The Way of Water is among the most costly films in Hollywood history, having cost between $350 million and $400 million to create. James Cameron stated that for the sequel to be regarded as successful, it would need to gross somewhere around $2 billion.
